About a week ago, I decided to do something that, most likely, nobody had asked me to do: volunteer at an event organised by someone else.
The job description was broad: do whatever is needed.
I covered fences. Carried equipment. Collected rubbish. Then covered the fences again because, apparently, they have a strange habit of uncovering themselves.
In short, I did all the things people usually notice only when no one has done them.
It was fun.
But it was also incredibly valuable.
Leaders often believe they have a good understanding of how their teams work. After all, they see the results, receive reports and listen to feedback.
But everything looks very different when you actually step into someone else's role.
You quickly realise which processes are unnecessarily complicated, what is missing and why the phrase, "It's only a five-minute job," is rarely the best way to show understanding.
Sometimes, the best way to become a better leader is to stop leading—at least for a little while.
