Workation in Cyprus: How Team Culture Reveals Itself Beyond the Office | Time2

Before the busy summer event season, the Time2 team headed to Cyprus. Why is a workation one of the best ways to experience real team culture and trust?

Before the summer event season kicked off, the entire TIME2 team headed to Cyprus.

Because for event professionals, summer is rarely a holiday season. It is usually the time when others are relaxing while we are busy making sure their time off is engaging, meaningful and memorable.

So before the busiest period of the year, we decided to do what every responsible adult would do – fly to an island and call it a workation.

And in my opinion, that is actually a pretty good culture test.

Because a workation is not just about sunshine, the sea and a laptop that always looks more romantic in photos than it does in real life.

In the office, everything is fairly straightforward: meetings, deadlines, responsibilities and the usual pace of work. A professional environment helps everyone remain professional. Most of the time.

A workation, however, loosens things up a little. There is more freedom, more independence and more opportunities to see how a team functions when nobody is standing behind them with an invisible Excel spreadsheet as a whip.

That is when it becomes very clear whether there is trust within the team, whether people take responsibility, whether they respect each other’s time and whether they can enjoy being together not only when there is a crisis to solve.

Cyprus was a great reminder that culture is not something you write in a presentation deck.

Culture is what remains when the presentation is closed and Microsoft Teams is switched off.

We feel ready for the summer season.

Now it is time to get back to work.
